Artery of Percheron territory infarct

Cerebrovascular diseases

General description

The artery of Percheron (AOP) is a common anatomical variation of the posterior cerebral artery that supplies blood to the paramedian thalami and rostral midbrain. Occlusion of the AOP, though rare, leads to bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction, which may or may not involve the midbrain. This condition is also known as AOP infarction.

The clinical presentation of AOP infarction typically includes a combination of altered consciousness, supranuclear vertical gaze palsy, and memory impairment.
