General description

Dextromethorphan-Associated Neurotoxicity with Cerebellar Edema (DANCE) syndrome is a central nervous system disorder caused by dextromethorphan, a common antitussive medication. Dextromethorphan is a morphinan derivative with sedative and dissociative properties, used as a cough suppressant. It works by directly acting on the cough center in the medulla oblongata, suppressing the cough reflex.
