Metformin intoxication
Toxicosis
Iatrogenic diseases
General description
Metformin is an oral antidiabetic medication commonly used in patients with type 2 diabetes. A serious potential side effect of metformin is lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with impaired renal function. In such cases, delayed excretion of metformin can lead to sustained high plasma concentrations, increasing the risk of lactic acidosis.
Radiographic features
MRI shows the characteristic lentiform fork sign, with bilateral swelling and T2WI/FLAIR hyperintensity of the lentiform nuclei, accompanied by bilateral hyperintensity along the external and internal capsules.
