Subdural/Epidural empyema

Infectious diseases

General description

Subdural/Epidural empyema is an infection located in the epidural or subdural space. It is more common in children and often follows meningitis, sinusitis, or otitis media. It can also occur in adults.

Subdural/Epidural empyema can result from the direct spread of infection from nearby structures such as the sinuses, middle ear, or nasal cavity. It may also develop as a complication of a bacterial meningitis, or following neurosurgical procedures or head trauma that breaches the integrity of the dural barrier.

The symptoms of Subdural/Epidural empyema include severe headache, fever, neurological deficits (such as weakness or paralysis on one side of the body), seizures, and changes in consciousness. In severe cases, it can progress rapidly, leading to increased intracranial pressure, coma, and potentially life-threatening complications.
